Meet The Counselors

Don Damsteegt, Ph.D. (E-mail)

Dr. Damsteegt is the owner of Family Psychology Associates, P.C. and is a Licensed Psychologist and a Health Service Provider in Psychology.

Dr. Damsteegt has been in practice for 20 years, including a year of post-doctoral residency in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His specialties include the treatment of individuals and families. He has been trained in cognitive therapy for depression and anxiety and is a certified Imago Relationship Therapist. He also does assessment of personality, using objective and projective personality tests

 

Marie Garry, M.A., LMHC (E-mail)

Marie Garry is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who received her masters degree in counseling psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in 1995. Prior to joining Family Psychology Associates, P.C., she worked with individuals, families, and groups in community mental health settings in Colorado. Through the therapy process, Marie helps clients to find effective solutions for life's challenges. Her areas of expertise include the treatment of anxiety, phobias, PTSD, depression, and life transition issues such as divorce or career change. In addition, she has been trained in the use of EMDR and has worked extensively with survivors of physical and emotional trauma.

 

Barbara J. Lips, Ph. D.

Dr. Lips is a Licensed Psychologist and is listed on the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.  She has been in practice since 1994, following several years as a college professor of psychology.

Dr. Lips emphasizes a cognitive-behavorial orientation in individual couple and family psychotherapy.  Other services include: psychological testing and evaluation, and consultation.  She assists individuals having problems in relationships, life stresses, and other problems in everyday living.  She also has extensive experience in treating the full range of mental disorders, including mood and anxiety personality disorders and serious and persistent mental illnesses.  She works with school-age children through the elderly.

 

David Martino, Ph.D. (E-mail)

Dr. Martino is a Licensed Psychologist and a Health Service Provider in Psychology. He has a Ph.D. in clinical-developmental psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and has been in practice for over nine years.

Dr. Martino's specialties include treatment of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, marital problems, parenting conflicts, childhood or adolescent underachievement, attention deficit, and intelligence testing. In providing therapy, Dr. Martino works within a cognitive-behavioral framework, while looking at important developmental issues.

Dr. Martino is an adjunct professor of psychology at Mount Mercy College and Grinnell College. He has contributed his expertise to various conferences, local news programs, radio shows, and newspapers. In addition, Dr. Martino has published several books for children, and his writings have been included in an emotional curriculum textbook.

 

Bruce A. Gregory (E-mail)

    Bruce A. Gregory is a licensed mental health counselor, receiving his Master's Degree in mental health counseling from the University of Northern Iowa.
    Bruce practices from a REBT (Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy) approach but uses other techniques to best meet his client's needs.  He serves children through adults and utilizes play therapy, sand tray, and is trained to use EMDR.  Bruce's specialty areas include anger management, anxiety, domestic violence, grief / loss issues, PTSD, sexuality, and spirituality.  He is available to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups.

Brandis E. Negrin, LMHC (E-mail)

Brandis Negrin is a licensed mental health counselor and a certified psychiatric rehabilitation counselor with a Masters degree in counseling from the University of Iowa.

Brandis takes an eclectic approach in order to meet the specific needs of each client. Her approaches focus on the strengths of a client while using cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic techniques to bring about positive change. Brandis’ work with clients is focused on assisting one to make the most of themselves by recognizing how to change their thoughts, feelings, and choices in their life that are not working to their benefit.

Brandis has practiced in settings ranging from young children through the geriatric population. Brandis has extensive experience treating clients diagnosed with or showing signs of eating disorders. (including Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, and Weight Maintenance).

In addition to this specialty, Brandis has experience treating a variety of other mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, addictions, and deviant adolescent behaviors. She also provides counseling and skill development to couples and families dealing with relationship, communication, single parent, and blended family issues.

Brandis is available to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups. In addition she provides seminars and presentations.

 

Esther Johnson, M.S., LMFT (E-mail)

Esther Johnson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who received her Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. Prior to joining Family Psychology Associates, P.C., she worked with individuals, couples, families and groups in her private practice in western Minnesota. She has also worked in other community-based mental health programs.

Esther’s specialties include marital counseling, divorce recovery, depression and sexual abuse trauma recovery. She has her Level II certification in the use of EMDR for trauma recovery. In addition, Esther has many years experience in treating perpetrators of sexual abuse or individuals addicted to sexual behaviors (such as Internet pornography).

Esther has worked extensively with church groups responding to sexual misconduct in their congregations.

Esther uses various therapeutic approaches in her therapy. When appropriate, she is also willing to integrate the Christian faith as part of the therapeutic process.

Drawing from her experiences as a therapist since 1981, Esther also provides supervision for therapists who are seeking licensure.

Esther is a Clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, Association for Treatment of Sexual Abusers, American Association of Christian Counseling, Christian Society for the Healing of Dissociative Disorders, and National Association of Christians in Recovery.

 

Jessica A. Schmidt, Psy.D., L.P. (E-mail)

Dr. Schmidt is a Licensed Psychologist. She has a Psy.D. in clinical psychology from the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University / Twin Cities.  Prior to joining Family Psychology Associates, P.C., Dr. Schmidt worked with individuals, families, and couples in rural community mental health settings in Minnesota and Missouri.  Her therapeutic orientation is integrative, utilizing cognitive-behavioral / rational-emotive, interpersonal, client-centered, and existential treatment approaches.

Dr. Schmidt specializes in depression, mood disorders, grief and loss issues, and anxiety difficulties.  She also conducts psychological evaluations to aid in diagnostic clarification to assess for Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, to evaluate parenting skills, and to assess readiness for bariatric surgery.  Dr. Schmidt works with individuals challenged by relationship difficulties adjustment issues, and personal problems such as improving self-esteem, assertiveness, and social skills.
